Step 1: At your initial consultation, we’ll check your Body Mass Index (BMI) and determine if you are a candidate for weight loss surgery. We’ll also complete a free insurance verification.

Step 2: If you qualify for surgery, you’ll complete comprehensive pre-surgical education, where you’ll gain in-depth knowledge about the surgical options available to you, and learn about everything to expect before and after surgery, as well as gaining an understanding of the risks and benefits of weight loss surgery.

Step 3: To best prepare yourself for a good weight loss surgery outcome and successful 2020 weight loss goals, you’ll meet with a My New Beginning dietitian to help you put together an achievable plan of good habits you should develop before surgery, including:

  •     Taking vitamins regularly;
  •     Decreasing meal portion sizes;
  •     Eating protein first at meals;
  •     Practice small bites, eating slowly, and chewing thoroughly;
  •     Incorporating exercise into your day;
  •     Adjusting your diet to avoid processed sugar and fried foods;
  •     Begin eliminating caffeine, alcohol, and carbonated drinks from your diet; and
  •     Eating 5 or 6 small meals a day, rather than 3 large meals.

Step 4: Prior to surgery, you may also complete a clinical psychology examination and counseling, to help determine that you can make appropriate decisions for your surgery, and to help you manage any underlying psychological reasons that may have contributed to obesity or past failed attempts at weight loss.

Step 5: You’re not the only person who has made 2020 the year to lose the weight! An important part of your successful journey can be finding the support you need. You’ll attend My New Beginning support groups with others on the weight loss journey, as part of the preparation for surgery.

Step 6: Your bariatric surgeon may want you to complete preoperative work or diagnostic tests before surgery, to make sure you are healthy and prepared. This may include tests such as bloodwork, EKG, chest x-rays, sleep studies, or anesthesiology consultations.

Step 7: The big day: surgery. Some apprehension is normal, but hopefully the comprehensive program and support through My New Beginning will help you feel confident and excited for the big day.

Then recovery begins. It’s important to follow your surgeon’s instructions and have follow-up appointments with the My New Beginning team to ensure you’re on the right track. Within six months of surgery, depending on the type of surgery among other factors, some people have lost up to 30 to 40% of their excess body weight.
